Balmer-dominated Shocks Revisited

چکیده
We present a new formalism to describe the ratios and profiles of emission lines from hydrogen in Balmer-dominated shocks. We use this model to interpret the measured widths and ratios of broad and narrow Hα, Hβ and Lyα emission lines in supernova remnants (SNRs). Our model results agree fairly well with those obtained previously by Chevalier, Kirshner & Raymond (1980) and are consistent with observations of several SNRs. The same model fails to account for the ratio of broad to narrow line emission from the reverse shock in SNR 1987A as observed by Heng et al. (2006). We suggest that this discrepancy between theory and observation results from a faulty assumption that Balmerdominated shocks can be treated as sharp discontinuities. If the spatial structure of the shock transition zone is taken into account, the predicted ratios of broad to narrow line emission in most SNRs will change by modest factors, but the ratio in SNR 1987A will increase substantially. Significantly greater shock velocities will be required to account for the observed full widths at half-maximum of the broad emission lines in most SNRs. Balmer-Dominated Shocks: A Concise Review
A concise and critical review of Balmer-dominated shocks (BDSs) is presented, summarizing the state of theory and observations, including models with/without shock precursors and their synergy with atomic physics. Observations of BDSs in supernova remnants are reviewed on an object-by-object basis. The relevance of BDSs towards understanding the acceleration of cosmic rays in shocks is emphasiz...
متن کاملBalmer-Dominated Spectra of Nonradiative Shocks in the Cygnus Loop, RCW 86 and Tycho Supernova Remnants
We present an observational and theoretical study of the optical emission from nonradiative shocks in three supernova remnants: the Cygnus Loop, RCW 86 and Tycho. The spectra of these shocks are dominated by collisionally excited hydrogen Balmer lines which have both a broad component caused by proton-neutral charge exchange and a narrow component caused by excitation of cold neutrals entering ...
متن کاملHigh Resolution Spectroscopy of Balmer - Dominated Shocks in the RCW 86 , Kepler and SN 1006 Supernova Remnants ⋆
We report results from high resolution optical spectroscopy of three non-radiative galactic supernova remnants, RCW 86, Kepler’s supernova remnant and SN 1006. We have measured the narrow component Hα line widths in Balmer-dominated filaments in RCW 86 and SN 1006, as well as the narrow component width in a Balmer-dominated knot in Kepler’s SNR. The narrow component line widths measured in RCW ...
متن کاملA Cosmic-ray Precursor Model for a Balmer-dominated Shock in Tycho’s Supernova Remnant
We present a time-dependent cosmic-ray modified shock model for which the calculated Hα emissivity profile agrees well with the Hα flux increase ahead of the Balmer-dominated shock at knot g in Tycho’s supernova remnant, observed by Lee et al. (2007). The backreaction of the cosmic ray component on the thermal component is treated in the two-fluid approximation, and we include thermal particle ...
متن کاملA Physical Relationship between Electron-proton Temperature Equilibration and Mach Number in Fast Collisionless Shocks
The analysis of Balmer-dominated optical spectra from non-radiative (adiabatic) SNRs has shown that the ratio of the electron to proton temperature at the blast wave is close to unity at vS .400 km s , but declines sharply down to the minimum value of me/mp dictated by the jump conditions at shock speeds exceeding 2000 km s . We propose a physical model for the heating of electrons and ions in ...
